REOPTIMIZE: a new project collaborating with MON OCEAN et MOI and ADOPT A FLOAT

by in carnet de bord

REOPTIMIZE (Remineralisation, Optics and Marine Particle Size) is a recently funded project by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (H2020-MSCA-IF-2015), that aims to use Bio-Argo floats for understanding a key biogeochemical process in marine ecosystems such as the remineralisation of particles.

Remineralisation is the conversion back to CO2 of the sinking particles such as the phytoplankton. Knowing the depth at which this process occurs is critical to predict how fast the remineralised CO2 will be re-exchanged with the atmosphere. This is essential to understand better the Earth’s climate change.

REOPTIMIZE will be carried out in the United Kingdom at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Emanuele Organelli and Dr. Giorgio Dall’Olmo, and one of its aims is to involve local schools in “Adopt a Float” and encourage collaborations with the schools already participating from different countries (France, Italy and South Africa).
